PostgreSQL Version Upgrade Schedule

Black Duck Compatibility & Reference

Black Duck SCA follows a rolling support model for the two most recent PostgreSQL versions, with approximately a 9-month stabilization period:

  • April releases: Introduce a new PostgreSQL version for external database testing and evaluation only (e.g. PostgreSQL 15.x in 2023.4.0).

  • July releases: Transition the new PostgreSQL version to fully supported status (e.g. PG 14.x in 2022.7.0).

  • October releases: Remove support for the oldest PostgreSQL version and migrate the PostgreSQL container to the next version.

This schedule ensures a period of overlap between adding new versions and deprecating old ones, allowing customers sufficient time for migration planning.

Black Duck SCA Direct Upgrade Support (PostgreSQL Container Only)

For upgrades of Black Duck SCA where the PostgreSQL container is in use, direct upgrades to the newest Black Duck SCA release will be restricted to Black Duck SCA versions less than about 2 years old. Specifically, direct upgrades will only be supported from Black Duck SCA versions whose PostgreSQL container is using a PostgreSQL major version no more than 2 major versions older than the current PostgreSQL container version.

This section details which Black Duck SCA versions can directly upgrade to newer versions. To ensure a smooth upgrade process, verify both your Black Duck SCA and PostgreSQL versions before starting an upgrade.

Note: Upgrading Black Duck SCA to a previous version (downgrading) is not recommended. This can result in data incompatibility, loss of features, or unexpected behavior. Always ensure that your upgrades follow the supported forward progression outlined in the documentation.
